Ice Hockey Victoria Wins Shootout for Gold in IHA National 2009 Ginsberg Championship

After going down 3 - 2 to Team IHNSW in the preliminary round robin, Team IHV won the one that counted defeating Team NSW 3 -2 in a shootout before a vocal packed house in Adelaide, South Australia.

Supported by IHV's Brown Challenge Cup Team, parents and local fans, both teams played a scoreless first period. After 08 and a half minutes of play in the second period , Victoria's Sam Hodic struck for the first goal unassisted to give the VICs a 1 - 0 lead. NSW answered 3 and a half minutes later when James Marino tied the game on a passing combination from Daniel Pataky and Casey Kubara. Less than a minute later VIC's Tyrone Bronte set up Kieren Sargent for the go ahead goal ending the period 2 -1 for the VICs.

With 03:26 remaining in the game, NSW's Hayden Sheard found the mark to tie the game 2 - 2. With both teams pressing and at the 01:42 mark left in the game, the VICs took a penalty followed by another with only one second remaining. No further goals were scored, sending the game into sudden death overtime with two VIC players in the penalty box.

Despite the VICs being shorthanded by two players for 19 seconds and one player for a minute and 40 seconds, NSW failed to find the winner. Both teams fought hard but failed to find the sudden death winner sending the game into a shootout.

Three shooters from each team were selected in the first round with NSW shooting first. All three NSW and two VIC players failed to score. The VIC's last shooter Captain Kieren Sargent double deeked NSW's goaltender, Nick Mizen for the winning goal and Gold.

Shots on VIC's Tynan Theobald was 20 for 2 and on NSW's Nick Mizen 10 for 2.

In the Bronze, a combined Queensland/Western Australian Team took out Team South Australia with a 5 - 2 score. Team Australian Capital Territory failed to reach the semi-finals with a number of close games.
