Team Victoria Win IHA’S 2009 National DeFris Championship

After going down to rival Team New South Wales (NSW) with a score of 4 - 1 in the round robin of IHA's 2009 National DeFris U16 Championship in Adelaide last weekend, Team Victoria (VIC) scored an unbelievable upset by winning the Championship with a 2 - 1 Gold Medal win over power house Team NSW.

Caleb Butler found the net on a pass from Chris Wong 4:41 into the first period to give the VICs their first goal. James Page notched the VIC's second goal on a power play at 14:07 when NSW's Chris Shephard took an elbowing penalty.

At 12:25 of the second, NSW's Jarrod Smith, walked in unassisted for NSW's first and only goal of the game.

Despite neither team taking a penalty in the third, both teams failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities. With both teams shortening their bench and Team NSW dominating the play, VIC's goaltender, Tynan Thebold, answered the call turning away all nine shots to hold off the stronger NSW team.

VC's Tynan Thebold faced 21 shots for one goal and NSW's Michael Denes faced 15 shots for 2 goals for the game.

Team Western Australia (WA) won Bronze over Team South Australia (SA) with a 2 - 1 score. Jordan Williams and Thomas Smail, on assists from Michael Salmond, scored WA's goals in the first period. SA's Jake McLeod scored unassisted for SA's only goal of the game. Shots on goal were 16 by WA on SA's Sam O'Neil and 17 by SA on WA's Tom Boschman.

Highest Point Scorer for the Championship was Jesse Garcia, NSW, with 8 goals and 3 assists. Best Goaltender was Sam O'Neil, SA.
