International Ice Hockey Returns to Melbourne – March 2026

Published Fri 01 Aug 2025

Ice Hockey Australia and Ice Hockey New Zealand are proud to announce that international ice hockey is coming back to Melbourne, with the Mighty Roos set to host the Ice Blacks in a three-game Trans-Tasman Series at O’Brien Icehouse from 13–15 March 2026.

Following the success of the Trans-Tasman Series in Auckland 2025, it’s time to welcome back the Series to Australian audiences and supporters. This eagerly anticipated series will showcase two fierce rivals going head-to-head, delivering high-paced, hard-hitting hockey for Australian fans to enjoy on home ice.

“We’re thrilled to bring this international series back to Melbourne,” said Adam Woolnough, General Manager of Ice Hockey Australia. “Our national team often plays abroad, so to have a home series of this calibre is a special opportunity—not just for the players, but for their families, friends, and fans.”

The series provides a crucial lead-in for both national teams ahead of their respective 2026 IIHF World Championship campaigns, with pride, preparation, and regional bragging rights all on the line.

“This event wouldn't be possible without the continued support of O’Brien Icehouse,” Woolnough added. “Their team’s commitment to growing the game in Australia is outstanding, and we’re grateful for the partnership.”

New Zealand is also embracing the chance to reignite the rivalry in front of passionate Melbourne crowds.

“After a sold-out series in New Zealand and the buzz from hosting a World Championships, ice hockey continues to gain momentum in the region,” said Paris Heyd, General Manager of Ice Hockey New Zealand. “This Trans-Tasman battle is the perfect build-up to our World Championship campaign and an event we’re proud to be part of.”

Mark your calendars — 13, 14, and 15 March 2026 — and get ready to witness international ice hockey at its best when the Mighty Roos and Ice Blacks clash in Melbourne
