Ice Hockey Australia proudly congratulates Mark Stephenson, IHA Coaching Director, and lifelong contributor to the sport, on being recognised with the Sport NSW Distinguished Long Service Honour. This prestigious accolade was formally presented to Mark at the 2025 NSW Community Sports Awards, held at CommBank Stadium in Parramatta on Monday, June 30.
Mark is one of 19 recipients selected for the award in 2025, acknowledging over 30 years of tireless and selfless contribution to the sport of ice hockey at the grassroots level. The Distinguished Long Service Honour recognises individual officials, coaches, administrators, and event organisers who have shown extraordinary dedication to nurturing and promoting community sport for more than 25 years.
Mark’s service to Ice Hockey New South Wales (IHNSW) and Ice Hockey Australia (IHA) has been nothing short of exceptional. As a volunteer coach and administrator for over three decades, he has spent countless hours at rinks across the country, coaching teams, mentoring coaches, and leading development programs—all without personal reward.
He has coached multiple state teams at the National Ice Hockey Championships, guided the Sydney Sirens in the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League, and led the Sydney Ice Dogs in the Australian Ice Hockey League. His impact spans both elite performance and beginner pathways, always with a focus on quality coaching and inclusive participation.
Mark has held the position of State Coaching Director for IHNSW for the past 20 years and currently sits on the IHNSW Board in the position. His influence is national—travelling interstate to assist other coaching boards and committees, sharing knowledge, and mentoring new and emerging coaches in his spare time. His commitment to ice hockey and the coaching community has never wavered.
“Mark is one of the giants of our sport,” said Adam Woolnough, General Manager of Ice Hockey Australia. “He’s shaped generations of players and coaches with his selfless dedication and deep understanding of the game. This recognition by Sport NSW is incredibly well-deserved”.
After receiving the Award, Mark added – "While I am truly honoured to receive this award, I believe it reflects the strength and commitment of volunteerism within the Australian ice hockey community. Thank you to all of our coaches, players, volunteers, and families".
On behalf of the entire ice hockey community, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and thanks to Mark Stephenson for his enduring service and legacy in our game.
