Street Hockey Hits Schools in Term 4, 2025 – Ice Hockey Australia Joins Sporting Schools Program
Published Mon 04 Aug 2025
Ice Hockey Australia (IHA) is proud to announce an exciting new chapter in the growth of our sport, with Street Hockey officially joining the Australian Sports Commission’s (ASC) Sporting Schools program from Term 4, 2025.
This groundbreaking partnership with the ASC Sporting Schools program will see IHA deliver a dynamic and inclusive Street Hockey program to primary schools across the country, offering students a fun, safe, and engaging introduction to the sport of ice hockey – without the ice, skates or physical contact.
“No Ice. No Contact. All Action!”
Designed with physical literacy at its core, the program promotes teamwork, confidence, and movement skills through high-energy sessions that teach students the fundamentals of ice hockey in a school-friendly format. From stickhandling and passing to strategy and collaboration, each session is tailored to encourage participation, physical activity, and enjoyment.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to grow awareness and excitement around ice hockey by bringing an accessible version of the sport directly into Australian schools,” said Adam Woolnough, General Manager of Ice Hockey Australia. “We’re committed to building the next generation of hockey players and fans, and this program gives us the perfect platform to do just that.”
The Street Hockey initiative is part of IHA’s broader mission to expand the reach of ice hockey in Australia, offering new entry points for children of all backgrounds to get involved in the sport.
Schools, educators, and providers will be supported through a comprehensive delivery model, ensuring a consistent, high-quality experience for all participants.
"Street hockey offers a unique ability to deliver dynamic gameplay, constant action, and immediate skill development in a completely safe and inclusive environment", said Andrew Erzen, IHA Street Hockey Coordinator. "Our program enhances fundamental movement competencies that are transferable across most sporting disciplines, while simultaneously fostering confidence, communication, and teamwork that extend far beyond the playing experience".
