On Saturday 10 February 2024, game 32 of the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League, (AWIHL) was held between Adelaide Rush and Melbourne Ice at the Adelaide Ice ArenA, South Australia.
During the game, which began at 4:45pm local time, many players from the Melbourne Ice and Rush teams became unwell. Players from both teams were taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital showing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

All players affected are now recovering with the support of team management, the AWIHL, Ice Hockey Australia and their families.

In a statement from Ice Hockey Australia:

“We are concerned to hear of the situation yesterday at the Ice Arena. Our thoughts are with all of those impacted. We wish all those affected a speedy recovery. We understand authorities are working with the venue to thoroughly investigate the incident. The AWIHL took immediate and considered action to cancel events and provide support to all players.
We stand with Ice Hockey SA, our Australian Leagues and side by side with ice venues in whatever measures need to be taken to ensure safety for all those who participate in our much-loved sport. We will review and work with our venue partners to ensure all ice hockey activities are only played in safe environments.”

We confirm the scheduled game at 10am this morning between the two teams has been cancelled by the League.

Authorities are now investigating the cause of the incident.
